Blue Depression Glass
Cobalt Blue depression glass is one of the more striking colorings you can find and is very remeniscient of the art-deco era. Pressed glassware from the period of the great depression is highly collectible and some of the pieces are quite rare. Blue depression glass items are no exception to this. Many pieces from the great manufacturers of the time such as the Fenton Glass Company, Hazel-Atlas and the Hocking Glass Company are highly sought after and valuable.
As with all of the colors of depression glass, cobalt blue items come in a variety of patterns and styles. Some of the blues are darker and more deep blue where as others are smoky blues that are more translucent than others. Patterns such as Aurora, Mayfair, Sugar Cane or Moderntone. The latter 2 of these patterns are possibly the most collectible.
Cobalt blue depression glassware was also the base for a series of Shirley Temple pieces, with her face etched onto the glass in white. These items have been reproduced since the age of the great depression though, so be warned of buying reproduction items which may feel slightly slimy or greasy to the touch compared to an original. Cobalt Blue is such a great color for collectors of glassware that many modern glassware items are made using the same coloring. Make sure that the item you are buying is original and has a history attached to it.
